Niara Lara, a senior at the Banneker Academic High School in Washington, District of Columbia won a third place, $4,000 DC CAP college scholarship showcasing her Trinidad and Tobago culture, STEEL PAN at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on March 24, 2017. Ms. Lara, one of ten DC Capital Stars finalist was selected amongst thousands of DC students to perform at the 9th annual event. The DC Capital Stars finalists were judged and critiqued by celebrities: Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, Patty Austin; Hip Hop Legend, MC Lyte; Donnie Simpson, DC Radio Host and Radio One DJ, Donnie Simpson; and Tony Award-winning Actor, Singer, and Dancer, Hinton Battle and the attendees.

Ms. Lara who has been playing pan since the age of four and founded PanLara with her two sisters in the DC Metro Area to promote music empowerment, culture and entrepreneurship.  Ms. Lara traveled to many places performing such as South Africa and provides community service at nursing homes to provide smiles to the seniors. At the DC Capital Stars, Ms. Lara is the first DC student to play the steel pan at the competition and won third place for her electrifying interpretation of Ain’t Nobody by Chaka Khan.

PanLara performs Haiti by David Rudder at the HavServe Gala 2017.

PanLara performed at the HavServe 6th Annual Volunteer Recognition Gala on January 14, 2017 at the Silver Spring Civic Center. The event brought together more than 250 HavServe supporters from all across the Washington, DC Metro Area. The event recognized volunteers, donors, members of the Haitian diaspora, and community members for assisting with fund raising to help rebuild five schools in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew.
